(December 19, 2017) — Senior cornerback Calvin Martin intercepted seven passes and broke up nine more in the De Leon secondary during the regular season to earn prestigious first-team all-state distinction on the Associated Press Sports Editors Conference 2A All-State Football Team released this week.
Martin was one of the bell cows of a De Len defense that pitched four shutouts and surrendered only 7.9 points during the regular season as the Bearcats went 10-0 for the first time since 2008 and were crowned champions in District 10-2A Division I.
The Bearcats rolled through the opening two rounds of the playoffs before being eliminated by Mart, which plays Refugio as part of this week’s championship game lineup at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Defensive lineman Kelan Hodges was picked for the second-team lineup, while lineman Joey Garcia and running back Anthony Rangel are honorable-mention offensive honorees. Rangel rushed for more than 1,700 yards in the regular season and eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark during the playoffs.
Martin and Rangel are the most crucial seniors form a De Leon team that finished 12-1 on the season.
