(April 2, 2018) – The Stephenville Yellow Jackets got a hat-trick performance from Kevin Martinez and two goals from J.J. Saldana in a 5-1 victory over Lubbock Estacado in Midland today.

“We really settled down and played our game in the second half.” Coach Taylor Smith said. “In the first half, we got a little over aggressive and played their game at times.”

Martinez netted a first half unassisted goal to give Stephenville a 1-0 lead they would take into halftime. Martinez scored two more goals in the second half to go along with two more from Saldana.

“When we got into the second half we played our style of soccer and we could tell it wore them down,” Smith said. “Once we settled down that’s when we were able to put them away.”

Louis Carrillo also had an assist for the Yellow Jackets while goalkeeper Alfredo Rocha came up big when he saved a penalty kick with Stephenville up 2-0.

Bridgeport is likely the Yellow Jackets next playoff opponent. That game is tentatively scheduled for Friday in Aledo.

Bridgeport will need to bring some firepower as Stephenville appears to be peaking. Since a shootout loss in their final game, the Yellow Jackets have hung up a 21-3 goal mark against their opponents.
