Kelly Rae Koonsman was born on October 14, 1969 in Odessa,Texas to Donna and Lee Carleton, passed away November 21, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at age 49. She is lovingly known as KC Rae, Aunt KK by her nephew Gunnar and Sadie by her mother.
She is preceded in death by her Grandmothers Ivon Walton and Orpha Carleton and Great Grandparents Rilla and Mac (Bodie) McCauley.
Kelly is survived by husband Gabe Koonsman of Hico, Texas; parents Donna and Lee Carleton of Odessa, TX; sister, Kristi McDaris and husband Matt, nephew Gunnar McDaris of Trophy Club, TX; In-laws Harlon and Linda Koonsman of Hico, TX.
Education was important to Kelly. She received a Bachelor of Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Nursing from Texas Tech University and was in the last year of a Master of Nursing program in Family Nurse Practitioner from Texas A & M University.
Other career accomplishments were: ER nursing, Cardiac Rehab and Flight Nurse certifications.
Kelly loved outdoor activities. She loved to participate in half marathons – bicycling and running. She even went on a rafting trip by herself. Exercising was an important part of her life.
After marrying Gabe she embraced the country. She soon became a nurse to goats, baby calves, dogs, cats and any other stray animal that showed up at the door. One time there was a baby playpen in the house. There wasn’t a human baby in it but three baby goats who needed extra care. She was always the nurse.
Kelly loved her jeep and used it as a pickup. She could get 4 or 5 bales of hay in the back. Another example of her ingenuity was when it was time to thin out the goat herd she loaded 5 goats in the back of the jeep and headed to the sale barn. She was insulted when the guys laughed at her as they unloaded the goats.
She liked driving the John Deere tractor and taking her nephew Gunnar in the gator to the stock tank and to see the animals.
Kelly was an extraordinary person. She loved life, her husband and her family.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, 2018, at Hico First Baptist Church.
