Skylar Stillwell and Grayson Traweek provided an onslaught of points and Stephenville’s defense kicked in at the right time as the Jackets knocked out Benbrook in a slugfest 63-55 at Gandy Gym Tuesday evening.
Stilwell scored nine of Stephenville’s first 13 points, and then Stephenville began to open up from all over the court getting points from Kaelon Dijulio, Kendal Storrs, Cody Storrs
Benbrook kept pace and used four first-half three-pointers to stay out front 33-32 at the half.
Stephenville had been struggling with a pattern of being down by a couple of buckets late in games and being forced to foul in an attempt to win. Downing Benbrook was the second game in a row where the Jackets were able to break that trend and found themselves on the opposite side of the spectrum.
“We played consistent tonight. We knew their shooters were going to make some shots and we just worked on not letting that rattle us,” Coach Bill Brooks said. “We just kept playing our game on both ends of the floor.”
Stephenville’s defense only allowed ten third-quarter points and pushed the Jackets out to a 48-43 lead. Benbrook began fouling in hopes of getting the basketball back, and Stephenville’s sharpshooters made them pay at the charity stripe going 9-11 in the fourth quarter. At the line in the final quarter, Traweek hit 5-6, Stillwell was a perfect 4-4 and K. Storrs added the last point.
Stephenville hits the road Friday for a matchup against Heritage and returns home Tuesday for a game against Wylie. The Jackets will be taking part in the What-a-Burger Tournament December 27-29.
Scoring—Dijulio 7, K. Storrs 3, Traweek 16, Stillwell 20, C. Storrs 9, Griffin 2.
