Two college students killed in Palo Pinto County crash on US 281

First responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of US Highway 281 and FM 4 on Friday, July 10. Despite their best efforts, two young people lost their lives.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Rick Hunter, troopers investigated a two-vehicle fatality crash at the intersection of 281 and Farm-to-Market Road 4 on Friday evening.

Preliminary investigations indicate that at approximately 6:20 p.m., a 2016 Toyota Corolla driven by 19-year-old Tyler R. Colvin of San Antonio, was traveling east on FM 4 and failed to yield the right-of-way to a 2016 GMC 3500 pickup traveling north on US 281. The pickup, driven by Jesse T. Laine, 28, of Weatherford, struck the passenger side of the Toyota.

The driver of the Toyota, Colvin, died at the scene. A 20-year-old passenger, Rebekah S. Wendt,  of Fort Worth, was flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Fort Worth where she succumbed to her injuries.

According to a release from the Young Conservatives of Texas, two members working for the Jon Francis campaign were involved in the accident on 281 Friday. The YCT release states two Trinity University students were en route back to their hotel after finishing their shift knocking on doors and talking with voters when the accident occurred.

Both Colvin and Wendt were students at Trinity University in San Antonio, the school confirmed Monday.

“To know that not only two of my members, but two of my friends have passed away is heartbreaking,” Trinity University YCT Chairman, Nathan Darsch, said in a release confirming the deaths. “Both were fun, energetic and always looking to help those around them and they will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers as well as those from everyone at Trinity goes out to their families and any others affected by this tragedy.”
