Second half surge leads Texans to win over UNT Dallas

STEPHENVILLE – A 49-point second half explosion helped lift Tarleton women’s basketball to its second win of the season on Saturday evening as they defeated UNT Dallas 73-46 in Wisdom Gym.

After leading 24-23 at halftime, the Texans (2-0, 0-0 WAC) came out in the second half and outscored the Trailblazers 49-23. They held UNT Dallas to a 25.8% field goal percentage in the half while shooting at a 48.5% clip themselves.

Elise Turrubiates paced Tarleton with 14 points and seven rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. Nya Mitchels also dropped 14 points while adding five rebounds, shooting 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Three other Texans scored in double digits, Jenna Dick had 11 points going 3-of-4 from downtown. Tyler Jackson and Teresa Da Silva each finished with 10 points, Jackson also led the team with four assists.

The Texans finished 21-of-30 from the free throw line, with 13 of the makes coming in the fourth quarter alone.

Early in the third quarter, UNT Dallas took the lead, 26-24. It was the last lead they would see for the remainder of the game. After a Tamia Miller layup for the Trailblazers cut the Tarleton lead to 34-30, the Texans immediately ripped off a 10-3 run to close out the quarter as Dick nailed two threes to spark some momentum for the Texans.

Heading into the fourth quarter with an 11-point advantage, the Texans put their foot on the gas pedal, never letting the Trailblazers cut the lead to single digits. Tarleton shot its highest percentage of the game in the last period, 53.33% to close UNT Dallas out. Turrubiates started things off with five straight points and the Texans stretched the lead to 51-33 before the Trailblazers got on the board.

13 different Texans saw action in the game, as Tarleton used 36 points off the bench to help them to victory.

Tarleton now looks to Tuesday when they head to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game can be streamed on ESPN+.
