STEPHENVILLE – For the second straight week and for the fifth time this season, a Tarleton State football player was named a United Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
On Monday, linebacker Ty Rawls was named the UAC Defensive Player of the Week, his first conference weekly award since joining the Texans.
Rawls had a fumble recovery, a forced fumble, a tackle for loss and seven total tackles (five solo) in Tarleton State’s 36-33 home win vs. Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. His forced and recovered fumble marked a crucial part of the game, key to Tarleton’s 15-point swing from trailing by five to leading by 10. When the Texans were down 19-14, they scored to go up 22-19, and three plays later, Rawls forced the takeaway. On the very next play, the Texans scored again to lead 29-19.
Rawls’ fumble recovery was the second of his career, and it marked his first career forced fumble. He tied his career-high in tackles at seven
Tarleton improved to 4-1 overall on Saturday, the Texans’ third straight season starting 4-1. The Texans have won eight of their last nine games overall, and they were ranked No. 14 in the national polls on Monday.
Also announced Monday by the UAC, Abilene Christian’s Sam Hicks was the offensive player of the week, North Alabam’s Scott Payne was special teams player of the week and Southern Utah’s Jayden Robertson was the freshman of the week.
