STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State Football just had its best season in its NCAA Division I era, and the Texans carried that momentum into bringing in one of the top recruiting classes nationwide.

The Texans announced on Wednesday, 2025 National Signing Day, that they have added over 30 players to the team. This is one of the largest classes in program history, and one of the best too. According to AthLinkd, College Football’s Premier Prospect Database, Tarleton State has the No. 2 class across all of the FCS, only behind Sacramento State.

There are 33 new Texans coming to Stephenville, 18 on offense, 13 on defense and two long snappers. Of the 33, 23 are transfers and 10 are high school signings.

“Our class is a group of guys who has been really successful and productive at their previous stop, they fit our needs across the line of scrimmage,” head coach Todd Whitten said. “The class really represents every position other than quarterback and inside linebacker out of the portal. We took a running back, we took wideouts, we took a tight end, we took offensive linemen, we did not take a quarterback out of the portal, we took some young quarterbacks. On the defensive side, we took edge players, outside linebackers, safeties, corners, we did not take inside linebackers, all of our inside linebackers are coming back. Our quarterback is coming back, we have two seniors.

“So, I think we really nailed it in terms of taking care of our needs,” Whitten continued. “There was a lot of production in the running back room and a lot of production in the receiver room graduating, so we had a big emphasis on those groups for us. This is a big class, one of the bigger classes we’ve ever had, but we had a senior class of 26, so it makes sense.”

The full list of Tarleton State’s 2025 National Signing Day class, in alphabetical order, is below:

Last year he posted 6.5 tackles for loss in 13 games, garnering at least a half-TFL in six different games. In each of the past two seasons, Turrentine was Second Team All-RMAC. He was also First Team All-Colorado this past year, along with Second Team Academic All-RMAC.

“James Turrentine was a great player at Colorado State-Pueblo, he was a dominant player at the Division 2 level,” Whitten said. “He’s got great strength and quickness.”

Turrentine played his first two collegiate years at American River College. He earned First Team All-League honors in 2022, part of the Beavers’ back-to-back Nor-Cal Conference Championship teams.

Turrentine is a Sacramento native who played his prep career at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, California. He was a three-year starter there, earning Second Team All-Conference honors, plus was a member of the honor roll. He will study kinesiology at Tarleton State University.

Woods posted both his sacks against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 12, and a career-high 10 tackles against Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 14.

“Stephen Woods, a First Team All-Lone Star Conference outside linebacker, nickel – probably a slot nickel,” Whitten said. “He was a highly, highly productive player, one of the best Division 2 players in the state of Texas. He was highly recruited coming out of the portal.”

Woods is a Houston native. He played three varsity years at George Ranch High School in Richmond, Texas, where he was twice First Team All-District. Woods was on the honor at both Angelo State and in high school. He will pursue his MBA at Tarleton State University.

In 2023, Young recorded 663 yards and six touchdowns on 31 receptions, ending the season with three straight 100-yard games, including 101 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season finale against Edinboro.

His 11 TD’s last year tied the program’s all-time single-season record, while his 1,146 yards are the second-most in school history for a single-season.

“T’iar Young is a big-bodied receiver,” Whitten said. “He’s a big-play guy, a lot of the same attributes that (Darius Cooper) had – I would never say there is another Coop out there, I would doubt that there is, but he’s a guy who has just been ultra-productive at the Division 2 level, and our experience with those guys is that they come in here and do really well.”

Young started his collegiate career at Millersville, another D2 school in the PSAC. He played in seven games as a true freshman, totaling 222 yards and four touchdowns on 12 receptions.
