STEPHENVILLE (February 2, 2015) — Tarleton State and Stephenville native Katelyn Conlee exploded at the plate like never before to open their 2015 softball campaign Monday.

Tarleton amassed 26 runs, its most ever in the first two games of a season, topping 21 runs in the opening two games in 2003.

Conlee did more than her fair share of the damage, combining for a perfect 7-7 with 10 runs batted in to lead the TexAnns back from behind in both games to win 15-14 and 11-8. She was 4-4 with 4 RBI in game one, followed by a 3-3 performance with 6 RBI in the nightcap.

Tarleton starts 2-0 for the third time in five years.

Kady Crow completed the wild first game by driving in Conlee for the winning run moments after Melody Mayse tied the game and kept it alive with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh.

Catcher Nyka Wood was 2-4 with 3 RBI, while short stop Delaney Wayland was 2-3 with 3 RBI and centerfielder Melody Mayse had two hits and drove in two runs. Conlee also scored four times in game one.

The pitching numbers were ugly throughout the day. Haley Freeman came in to get the win, allowing six runs – five earned – on seven hits and four walks in 4.1 innings. Starter Shelby Hedrick lasted only 2.2 innings in the circle. She surrendered eight runs – seven earned – on nine hits and two walks and also hit a pair of batters.

SWOSU also struggled from the circle, using three pitchers with each surrendering at least five runs. Leading the Bulldogs at the plater were first baseman Adrienne Martinez, 2-3 with 3 RBI, and right fielder Tori Hawk, 3-4 with 5 RBI.

Mayse was big for the TExAnns again in game two, going 4-4 with 2 RBI. Conlee hit her first home run of the season, a 3-run shot in the bottom of the first. She also had two doubles for three total extra-base hits in the doubleheader.

Conlee also earned the win in her first pitching appearance. She navigated the first four innings surrendering seven runs – four earned – on six hits and five walks.

Tarleton travels to Texas A&M-Commerce for classic play this weekend. The TexAnns face Southern Nazarene (Okla.) at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and meet Northeastern State (Okla.) at 2:30 p.m. each day. The next home date is next Monday, February 9, against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
