STEPHENVILLE – The NCAA released its first set of regional rankings and Tarleton occupies the No. 5 seed in Super Region 4.
The NCAA regional rankings are the official ranking system used by the NCAA for seeding national playoff teams. The top seven teams in each of the nation’s four super regions will be invited to compete for the Division II National Championship. The region’s top team will receive a first-round bye while the remaining three high seeds host the playoff games.
A trio of 8-0 teams sit atop the rankings, which were released Monday afternoon. Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State, and Colorado Mines are the top three teams in the rankings, respectively, while Colorado State-Pueblo is at No. 4 with a 7-1 record.
At No. 5, Tarleton leads all Lone Star Conference schools in positioning while MSU Texas and Texas A&M-Commerce round out the potential playoff contenders at No. 6 and 7, respectively. Central Washington, St. Cloud St., and Azusa Pacific are on the outside looking in at No. 8, 9 and 10.
Tarleton will visit Wichita Falls Saturday at 7 p.m. for a primetime showdown with No. 10 MSU Texas, formerly Midwestern State. It will be the first game between a top-10 Tarleton team and a top-10 opponent since Tarleton joined the NCAA in 1994.
