STEPHENVILLE (January 24, 2015) — Mike Carroll has been named interim athletic director at Stephenville ISD.
Carroll confirmed the appointment to The Flash at Friday night’s basketball games at Gandy Gym, hours after news broke that successful head football coach and athletic director Joe Gillespie had accepted a position coaching linebackers at the University of Tulsa.

Carroll came to SISD as head athletic trainer in the fall of 2003, when current SMU coach Chad Morris began his five-year stint in Stephenville. Carroll regularly assisted Morris and staff with administrative duties, and when Morris turned the reins over to Gillespie in 2008, Carroll was appointed the title of Assistant Athletic Director.
On Friday, Superintendent Matt Underwood informed The Flash, he hopes to have the position officially posted by next Wednesday. The position will remain open for three weeks, Underwood said, then a committee will begin narrowing the field of applicants.
Underwood said both internal and external candidates will be considered in the hiring process.
